ERACED MAGAZINE
How it started
Summer 2020
where it went
In summer of 2020 I became a news hermit. I started my mornings with bad instant coffee and a podcast. I filled my afternoons and evenings with articles: I read and read and read. As a journalism student, most of this was not new for me, but in the setting of quarantine summer when casual activities tended to become all-consuming, the news began to consume me.
I started observing trends in the media, specifically regarding conversations about race and intersectionality. I grew frustrated with how little race was incorporated in the news, at a time when rampant racial violence and injustices were in public focus. I envisioned a magazine of people from diverse communities — a kind of citizen journalism — who could share dialogue surrounding race and intersectionality. I wanted to unlearn and rethink the traditional journalistic practices I learned in my own studies and spaces, and what novel strategies could benefit the goals of the magazine.
Eraced Magazine's goals:
-
transparency: where is our news coming from?
-
inclusion: celebrating difference
-
race and intersectionality: how can we incorporate context and provide in-depth reporting
-
range of subjects and mediums
-
strong visuals
-
steady social media presence
-
amplify BIPoC voices
-
thriving community of content creators
With these goals I locked myself in my bedroom (after purchasing a french press) and started to work.
-
Spent months only thinking about Eraced (sorry to my friends and family) and launched early Sept. 2020
-
Learned different programming languages relevant to creating the website all in two months
-
The day before launch we had a huge site error and I had to recode everything in twelve hours and change the design of the site...(I do not study computer science)
-
The actual launch went beautifully and the site is (in my opinion) a work of art thanks to the help of so many on the team
-
-
Worked with over 40 contributors, with more than 80 pieces published, and trained writers in all stages of journalistic writing and reporting
-
Designed graphics on the site with a team of artists, trained podcasters in creating and editing podcasts, and maintained a social media presence on Instagram and Twitter
-
Stayed consistently news savvy, ensuring we wrote timely pieces that provided perspective, insight, and voice
-
Applied and received a grant for magazine print production and advertisements
now
As I am currently more interested in environmental research, at this time I am not doing much with Eraced, but I still cherish its value and meaning for me at the time I was most involved with the magazine. I would hope to return to it at some point in the future when I can create a more self-sustaining version of the magazine.
